The Language Support Program at SIS is based on an integrated and collaborative model designed to provide students with full and equal access to their grade level curriculum. Based on the Sheltered Immersion model, the program recognizes that the foundation for school success is academic literacy in English. The theoretical underpinning of the model is that language acquisition is enhanced through meaningful use and interaction. Specialists and teachers collaborate to make content comprehensible for students through strategic use of visual aids, modeling, vocabulary previews, adapted texts, cooperative learning, and peer tutoring. These sheltering techniques are used increasingly in the United States as teachers prepare students to meet high academic standards.
